NETHERLANDS PREPARES FOR STORM SURGE - ONLINE DASHBOARD DEMO (UPDATED)
NEWS
A storm surge, caused by high Northwestern winds, has caused a dangerous situation in the north of the Netherlands. One of the flood defences there is attacked and might not withstand the high water levels. Mandatory evacuations have been issued to clear a small polder.
While authorities and civilians prepare for this possible (small-scale) flood, new tools developed in the Flood Control 2015 framework can be demonstrated using these real-time data. Future water levels are being forecasted and distributed via Delft-FEWS, while information from various public sources including Twitter is collected and distributed via an online Dashboard.
The Dashboard can be viewed at this location: http://groningen.dashboardwaterveiligheid.nl/
The situation is now under control. The flood defences were not breached, in part thanks to effective water management by the water board Noorderzijlvest. Flood Control 2015 innovations have played a role in the preparation for this event, e.g. through implemented forecasting and training tools. We will communicate about this in a future news bulletin.
